State Planning Grant III Overview
Virginia just recently received notification that it has been awarded a third and final round of grant funds in the amount of $175,000 from the HRSA SPG Program. With these funds, Virginia will complete plans for a two-pronged (supply and demand) approach for expanding coverage to the uninsured population in the Central Virginia Health Planning Region, the region in Virginia with the greatest percentage of uninsured. This includes:
- *The design of a new (or modified) insurance product that adheres to four regionally defined guiding principles as a way to increase the availability of affordable insurance coverage options within the targeted region. These principles include: 1) uses data to identify the appropriate subpopulation(s) to be targeted, 2) strengthens the existing safety net system without creating crowd-out, 3) has mechanisms to ensure cost predictability/control, and 4) has portability.
- Research on the impact of economic development on health insurance coverage rates and the development of strategies that could increase the demand for health care coverage based on research findings that can be integrated into the economic development plan for the targeted region.
